Die Prinzipien der Aufklärung, welche die französische Revolution inspirieren sollten, setzten sich zuerst in Dänemark durch. Die Schriften von Voltaire und Rousseau gelangten in den Norden durch Dr. Johann Struensee, einem deutschen Physiker, der an den dänischen Hof geordert wurde. Er sollte sich um Christian VII kümmern, eventuell sorgte er auch für Queen Caroline Mathilde... Diese Liebe voller Risiken ist das Material dieser dänischen Big Budget Produktion. Dänemark 1766, die europäische Aufklärung ist im Norden noch nicht angekommen. Die Bauern arbeiten in Leibeigenschaft, das Recht der Herrschenden ist absolut. Brilliant historical film

Before seeing this film, I knew nothing about Danish court (and history) - now I got truly great insight into the beginning of Enlightenment Era in Denmark. And no, the experience was not boring as it sounds like. Here we have three main characters: the king, who wasn't quite sane and I think was the most difficult to play (kudos to young Danish actor we might expect a lot in the future), young neglected queen (delightful surprise, beautiful young actress that proved herself again in Anna Karenina) and Dr Struensee, the man who made all the steps forward in the kingdom start happening, and what was important too, made king believe that despite his mental shortcomings he can be more than just mere puppet. That role of royal physician-soon-to-be-doomed went to Mads Mikkelsen, and he bore …

A Royal Affair (2012) This costume drama from Denmark is the story of a young woman (Alicia Vikander) who marries a king (Mikkel Boe Folsgaard) who is insane. In a circumstance of being in the right place at the right time, the king picks a young, brash doctor (Mads Mikkelsen) to not only join his court but also be his friend and counselor. The doctor then has an affair with the young queen that changes their relationship and changes the workings of the court, itself. This is a gorgeous film with great sets and costumes, but it’s the acting that makes this film work so well. Mikkelsen and Vikander have great chemistry on screen together; their passion is so well displayed.
