The story of Daredevil is one with potential to be a dark and significant exploration of crime and morality with a unique and vulnerable hero. Sadly, this film misses all of that and, instead, creates Daredevil as a ridiculous and cartoony do-gooder with an ever more ridiculous villain (Colin Farrell has never appeared more silly.) |

"Daredevil" by Yojimbo |
|
After the success of Spiderman and X-Men, a rash of marvel adaptations was inevitable. Here Ben Affleck dons the leather catsuit to deal out vengeance ninja style as blind vigilante, Daredevil. All the ingredients are here; the flashy fight sequences, thumping soundtrack and origin backstory, and it all feels very familiar. It's overly florid direction and annoyingly conspicuous pop music soundtrack makes it seem more like MTV than a film in places and the attempts at humour do not really work, but the main problem is with the characters. They are uniformly bland and stereotypical, particularly Ben Affleck who displays his usual lack of presence and charisma. Having said that, it's far from dreadful; the action is efficient and the visualisation of Daredevil's sonar "vision" is quite nice... |

Does not live up to the source material. |

Terrible film about a great comic when written by Frank Miller. And this movie is trying to emulate Frank Miller's comics but it fails completely. The scene that emulates the comic is very poorly done and forced. The action is either over done or oddly done like the fight in the park that is just stupid. Ben Affleck brings nothing to Daredevil who could be interesting but is not in this movie, which adds him killing although he suddenly stops in the end for no real reason. Elektra in the movie is the worse offensive since she is so complicated in the comic but incredibly simplified in this. Bullseye is okay but too over the top and not really scary like he could be. Kingpin is finely played but the story makes not sense, especially how daredevil beating him up makes it so he is taken done... |

Action: 1.5/3 + Comedy: 0.5/2 + Good vs Evil: 1/1 + Love/Sex: 1/1 + Special Effects: 0/1 + Plot: 1/1 + Music: 0.5/1 = 5.5/10 or 55%.
There is good within this introduction to the man without fear. Namely, the audio-visual style in which we see how the Daredevil's heightened senses allow him to "see" other objects. At other points the chemistry between the Daredvil and Elektra when they are out of costume is commendable.
Aside from this the film falls apart. The poor CGI effects detract from everything, including the fun Farrell has as Bullseye, and make scenes cringe worthy (for example the brawl match between Daredevil and Bullseye on a church organ). Everything else becomes rushed. Daredevil is all of a sudden disturbed by people perceiving him as a bad guy, even though he's dres... |
