This is an exciting and thorough adaptation of the famous book, expanding on all the novel's most interesting parts with thrilling action scenes and tense confrontations. Jim Caviezel anchors the film with an impassioned and tortured portrayal of a man on a revenge quest.

This movie was very fun, though not up to par with the novel (which is my favorite book that I've read up to now). The acting was top notch on the part of Richard Harris and James Caviezel. There was certainly something lacking in the performance by Guy Pearce (who, after seeing "The Time Machine" I felt like I should ask for my money back every single time he entered the screen). A great, cool, sexy action-packed thrill-ride, I recommend this movie highly.

After being framed for treason by his close friend, Edmond Dantes (James Caviezel),is thrown in a prison, where he is tortured for many years. His daily contact with the outside world is when a slot opens in his door and food is dropped into the plate. For fun, the sadistic warden marks the anniversary of Edmond's incarceration by whipping him unconscious. As time passes Edmond turns more and more inward and begins to lose his grip on sanity. Then his floor springs upward and out crawls a much older prisoner Abbé Faria (Richard Harris) who thought he had been tunneling to the outside cliffs.

In exchange for his silence and his assistance, the old priest begins to teach Edmond things about reading, writing, and money. Edmond cleverly escapes from jail, along with his "man" Jacobo …

"The Count Of Monte Cristo" by Yojimbo

Edmond Dantes naively accepts a letter from Napoleon and is consequently betrayed and imprisoned for 13 years. Upon his escape, he sets about destroying those responsible. The Count Of Monte Cristo is a solid, reasonably faithful adaptation of Dumas' literary classic with a strong cast who all put in decent performances. The best part of the film is probably the interaction between Caviezel and veteran actor Richard Harris as his prison bound mentor although I would like to have seen more made of this relationship. Freddie Jones and Michael Wincott also do well with parts that barely qualify for cameo status although Guy Pearce's Fernand is so irredeemably caddish he seems a little two dimensional. It has a certain authenticity however, with beautiful locations and fine costumes but it …
