All throughout "Super," I wasn't sure whether I should be dying with laughter or cringing in disgust. James Gunn's superhero dark comedy is like a mean-spirited, offensive, and unredeeming version of "Kick-Ass."

Maybe I just like violence, but there's something about a masked Rainn Wilson hitting random strangers with a pipe wrench that just makes me smile. The ending was actually quite moving considering all the violence that preceded it. The entire film was quite a nice - like Kick-Ass if the main character was an adult.

Frank Darbo (Rainn Wilson) is a cook whose wife, Sarah (Liv Tyler), was stolen by the drug dealing boss Jacques (Kevin Bacon). He has a revelation and a comic-book salesgirl named Libby (Ellen Page) helps him out with his personal mission. A good dark comedy with nice messages but imperfectly represented onscreen. The writer-director admits he wrote the project the time Kick-Ass was being created. More humorous but much darker with a bitter conclusion. Aside from the unlikable characters (namely Sarah), weird apparitions of Frank and a miscast in Bacon as the protagonist, its still an entertaining graphic violent comedy crime flick worth viewing. Soundtrack was inserted perfectly in certain scenes and screenplay effective. Super is definitely worth watching for some laughable …
