Plot: Brian Flanagan (Cruise), a good looking, hardworking young man takes up bartending when he realizes he can't make it in the business world without a college degree. Brian teams up with veteran bartender Douglas Coughlin (Brian Brown) and they quickly become the most popular bartenders in the city.

Trying to raise money to open their own place, they spend the summer bartending in Jamaica where Cruise meets and falls in love with Jordan (Shue). But he quickly messes it up by cheating on her in order to win a bet. -- serioussir

While watching the movie I got thirsty myself and I wouldn't mind to have those drinks.

Just like Top Gun, this is quintessential Tom Cruise film. Even if you don't like the guy, you have to admit, he's just perfect for this role. When roles work, they work - and this is one time when the actor perfectly fits the role. The rest of the cast works as well - especially a young Elisabeth Shue.

Despite a likable cast and some solid laughs, I found myself drifting halfway through the film. The dramatic moments of the film feel a little forced and the film sort of glosses over anything of real depth with 'Movie of the Week" aplomb.

Cocktail erzählt die Geschichte zweier Bartender in verschiedenen Betten. Bemerkenswert ist dabei, wie wenig der Film über Bars weiss. Am Anfang gibt es eine Szene, in der die Beiden sich die Flaschen hin und her werfen, Eiswürfel quer über die Bar zielen und das alles choreographiert zu Rockn Roll. Es dauert auf diese Weise etwa fünf Minuten, um einen Cocktail herzustellen. Am Ende gibts auch noch Applaus des massenhaft auf einen Drink wartenden Publikums. In Wahrheit würden die Gäste nicht applaudieren, sondern die Beiden beschimpfen. Wir müssen also eine gewisse Verlogenheit in Kauf nehmen und akzeptieren, dass in diesem Film Bartending eben so viel bedeutet wie "Musik-Video". Tom Cruise before he went out of his gord crazy. This is one of the few Tom Cruise movies that I still respect and enjoy. Cocktail is ultimately the story of Bryan Flanagan's (Tom Cruise) reaction as he doggedly pursues his ambition of getting rich, only to learn that his dream was never really worth pursuing.
