The thing about this movie is that it's a sum of its parts. That is, the individual character moments and meditations on life and love are more connective than the film as a whole, which follows a pretty disorganized and sprawling plot. Excellent cinematography (some beautiful shots) and a strong use of music, particularly for an Asian film.

This wasn't horrible, but I'm glad it wasn't the first Wong Kar-Wai film I saw. I doubt it would have led me to see more. And then I would have missed out on "In the Mood for Love," "My Blueberry Nights" and "2046," which would have been a shame.

Great soundtrack, characters, style, fragmented plot and all around enjoyable movie. I can't find anything I don't love about it and this remains my favorite movie by master director Kar Wong Wai.

An excellent film and it's probably rewatchable. The only bad thing is that they play "California Dreamin'" too many times. However, it's an intrinsic part to the plot and may be forgiven. The first WKW movie I saw. Since it was good, I decided to see more and thank goodness for that.

Having seen the entire Wong Kar Wai filmography, I can say this one is my favorite. I love how he mixes the story, the selection he made of the soundtrack (always great in his movies), the stories and the acting. It has also a great script, with some memorable and hilarious momments and lines. All that, together with the usual fantastic aesthetic style of the best the director alive, possibly?

Chungking Express review

It embodies two stories involving Cop 223, a woman with a blonde wig (played by Brigitte Lin), Cop 663 and Faye. The plot on the 2nd story was more engaging than the first, wishing there could have been more to their relationship. Soundtrack well picked and camera direction was detailed. Had countless memorable provocative quotes such as: "People change." - Woman in blond wig "Takes time to change." "It takes time to get used to things." - No.663 "I just want to enjoy life." - Faye. Very stylish direction, nice locations and sincere acting, Chungking Express is a very good drama with bits of humor injected coupled with some likable characters. If only there were more clarity and direction to the figures on the first story and a bit more action on both, then this would have been flaw...
