Filmed over year, Joan Rivers A Piece of Work follows Joan's later career with discussions of the early years cut in. The non-linear stories and endless laughs really make A Piece of Work, well, a piece of work. What really makes this documentary so powerful is not the comedy but the emotions that Joan brings. There's a fragile side of her shown that wasn't really carted around by her in comedy shows or on TV previously. But while I really like Joan's comedy, I found that certain parts of the film tiresome and dull. While the breaks in comedy and story telling may of been necessary, they lasted too long. And this is a fans only kind of film. While a non-Joan fan could watch it, they definitely won't enjoy it. For Joan fans, it's a must!

I think you really have to be a fan of Joan Rivers to enjoy this documentary. It's a year in the life of Joan, as she tries to become relevant again in a time that's willing to forget her. We see Joan talk about her past success and her playing to dirty, low attended comedy clubs, all the way to her comeback from appearing on Celebrity Apprentice. While sometimes it's interesting to see old footage or get her historical perspective on things, too often than not she comes across as a spoiled snob who's desperately trying to hold on to her fame. When she makes a toast at Thanksgiving and says "I'm so thankful that a limo gets to pick me up everyday" I had had just about enough. Strictly for fans.
