This remake is more of your standard action film. A so-so attempt to modernize the original cult favorite by John Carpenter. |

It wasn't bad for what it was, but then again it wasn't all that. Not what I expected when i set down in the theater. I was looking for more action, less drama. The gun play wasn't too bad. Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne did play well together in this one, hopefully we will see them again |

A busy remake with plentiful amounts of skilled tension, but eventually it succumbs to generic action nonsense, arbitrary plot twists and the following cliches: the "forgotten and convenient" escape tunnel, the retiring cop, the minority villains and a ringleader with no emotion. It's a mixed bag, and definitely not as good as John Carpenter's original film. Final Grade: C+ |

I had no real problem with this film, but I wasn't impressed either. It's a good action film with plenty of gun play, a decent plot and even some attempt at character development, but it's just enough to keep it mildly interesting. |

"Assault On Precinct 13" by Yojimbo |

A police station with a skeleton staff that is about to be decommissioned plays unexpected host to a notorious gangster, and suddenly finds itself under seige. This remake of John Carpenter's classic is unsurprisingly not a patch on the original, but still an efficient (albeit humourless) shoot-em-up. Ethan Hawke does well with his stereotypical burnt out cop character and Fishburne is as charismatic as always; it's also nice to see female characters that are not screeching and hysterical damsels in distress. Atmospheric and nicely shot, but the tension and menace of an unseen, anonymous and largely motiveless enemy is replaced by weak characterisation and some nonsense about corrupt cops. A pretty good actioner that's let down only by a morally suspect ending and the typical insistence o... |
