Even though I never seen the original material, I have to believe it's more entertaining than this. The main problem is the plot meanders all over the map and the young, mostly unknown, cast can't shoulder the weight of this huge spectacle. Even the special effects seem sub par. It promises a sequel, but I don't think we'll have to worry about one. |

Has some dull scenes, lack of character development, miscasts and sense of direction. Just a lack of planning in my opinion. The special effects were not impressive, it was like watching a cartoon than a movie. We need to see more Unbreakable type flicks. The Last Airbender could have been way better. |

"The Last Airbender" by Yojimbo |
|
A world populated by four tribes who can manipulated the elements of fire, water, earth and air can only regain balance upon the return of The Avatar, but the ambitious ruler of the Fire Nation is interested only in conquest. M. Night Shyamalan clearly wished to create a epic fantasy world in the vein of Lord Of the Rings by pillaging Eastern religions and philosophy. Unfortunately the mythology he created is muddled and inconsistent and despite some impressive visual spectacle the whole film falls flat on its face. The kid's TV standard cast are completely lacking in the kind of presence or charisma needed to pull this kind of thing off and some painful exposition and very clunky dialogue makes it very difficult to care about any of it. MNS's grasp of directing action misses the mark bad... |

The Failure that is the Last Airbender |
|
To those thinking about viewing The Last Airbender by M. Night, please don't. If you are looking to see a good portrayal of the animated kid's tv show Avatar: The Last Airbender, this is not the film to go see. Watch the actual tv show on Netflix or something. This is just a waste of your time.
This film is chuck full of bad acting, bad writing, and somewhat racial groupings of Asian and Indian culture. The only good thing that this film has going for it is the quasi-decent graphics. Many key points of the first season that were supposed to be portrayed, were not. Night basically strewed himself on this fact, for many of these points that were left out, come up in the other two seasons. If he were to attempt to fill in these details in a second film, while trying to continue the stor... |

Utter Disappointment |
|
I love M. Night Shyamalan, and I love the TV series "Avatar: The Last Airbender", so naturally I was really excited for this movie. But when I finally was able to see it, my heart was just torn. The names were all pronounced wrong, the acting seemed way too animated, and so much was flipped around. In the first "book", 'Sokka', 'Aang', and 'Katara' don't fly to the Earth Kingdom; they head straight for the Northern Water Tribe. Then at the end with the big fight between the Fire Nation and the Northern Water Tribe, 'Aang' is supposed to use his Avatar powers to turn into this giant Water Creature and crash some of the Fire Nation Ships, and then have them retreat. But no, the climax was when 'General Zhao' (not Commander) was killed by four Water Tribe people. Yes, most of the special eff... |
