This movie was intense throughout. The effects were amazing and so were all the characters. With social commentar throughout, this movie provided, action, suspense, sadness, happiness, and all around craziness. Strangely believable on so many levels. This movie is a MUST see for all. This is not your average Sci-Fi Movie. |

Although the thinly veiled allegory for apartheid is at times preachy, the sci-fi post-apocalyptic world crafted here is unique and richly realized. First-time actor Sharlto Copley is impressive and the film manages to remain exciting, while, at the same time, touching on interesting themes not often found in the sci-fi genre. |

"District 9" by Yojimbo |
|
When an malfunctioning alien spaceship strands over a million of its inhabitants on Earth, they find an unlikely champion in the shape of a previously self serving weapons manufacturer exec who starts to metamorphose into one of them after exposure to an unknown chemical. District 9's plot takes a lot of cues from cult 80s sci-fi, most obviously the racism allegory of Alien Nation and the genetic mutation premise from Cronenberg's The Fly. However, unlike something like Doomsday which simply ripped off old films with no wit or subtlety, this film actually develops upon its ideas. The production design is fantastic and the action sequences extremely well done, particularly the brilliantly handled climactic battle and the film has a great deal of momentum that meant I enjoyed it more and m... |

This Space Ship Doesn't Fly |

Here is yet another perfect example of what should have been a really interesting concept as a baseline for a great sci-fi movie. Instead we get a story that initially hooks you but then loses focus and eventually drifts off into absurdity. The tip off should have been the fact that to gain any traction, this movie had to have Peter Jackson’s name attached to it (as producer); because most of us have never heard of anyone else in this film.
WETA studios (provider of the outstanding effects for the ‘Lord Of The Rings’ trilogy) provides the special effects, but with mixed results. While the alien craft and other devices are presented in good detail, the real star of this movie has to be the rendering of the alien creatures themselves. Unfortunately, the film neglects to make full use of... |

District 9 review |
|
Multinational United (MNU) is tasked to relocate the aliens from District 9 to District 10. Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is assigned the relocation of aliens by serving illegal eviction notices. He then gets infected while growing an alien arm so MNU conducts several tests such as using his hand to fire the alien weapons. Wikus makes a deal with an alien (Christopher) to have his hand fixed and the aliens go home. He was able to steal weapons to look for the canister of Chris and flies a space ship. Nigerian arms-dealer Obesandjo orders the capture of Wikus after being detained shortly by a cruel MNU soldier Koobus Venter (David James). Wikus saves his alien friend by using one of their machines.
The documentary video camera news style of filming really makes the film genu... |

It was surprisingly fantastic! It does a great job blending documentary with action. Surprised to hear that most of the dialogue was improvised. Also, the effects look completely real! |

I left the theater feeling I had been a bit ripped off , but found myself 8 hours later still thinking about this film.. was it a well done, blair witch project styled science fiction film ? The special effects never seemed to get in the way of the plot driven film. The film is told mainly from the perspective of a single individual, Van de Merwe, and the greed of MNU officials. Although the aliens are quite well crafted, their appearance was never foremost in the film's story. I like the great attention to detail of the ship and crew but it never was pivotal to me in the film's direction. I wonder if in 3 years they will come out with the sequel , District 10 ? 'will chris return as promised to save his people and Van de Merwe? |
