What’s always been most striking about John Landis’s lycanthropic thriller is the brilliant way it veers from comedy to gruesome terror and back again, in the blink of an eye. Figure in the services of make-up supremo Rick Baker, some of the most inventive shocks imaginable (those zombie Nazis!) and a dynamite selection of moon-related FM radio classics (not to mention Jenny Agutter’s face), and there’s no wonder it placed so high on this list. Horror parody was always going to be a doozy for Landis, given that he’d previously made such classic funnies as ‘The Kentucky Fried Movie’, ‘Animal House’ and ‘The Blues Brothers’ – but there’s no doubt that ‘American Werewolf’ is his crowning achievement |

An American Werewolf in London review |
|
A story of American college students, David Kessler and Jack Goodman. Both gets killed by a mysterious animal. The screenplay was unimpressive and the acting was just unnatural. It's humor aspect was not as efficient as well. Highlights were some laughable moments, the make-up and car crashes in the very abrupt conclusion. The story itself was very light and ending too swift for such a build-up. Themes of love, friendship and admitting crime were touched. Settings were well picked and the movie only becomes enjoyable towards the middle, the pace was suffice and length short since certain scenes felt very rushed. Overall, An American Werewolf in London maybe one of the pioneers when tackling on the subject of werewolves coupled with some funny sequences. |

"An American Werewolf In London" by Yojimbo |
|
When two American students are attacked on the Yorkshire moors, one is killed but the other survives to be haunted by horrifying dreams and fears he may be turning into a werewolf. American Werewolf enjoys the reputation as one of the great horror comedies, but anyone expecting a slew of cheap gags in the vein of Scary Movie will get a little more than they bargained for. When Kubrick made Dr Strangelove he basically made a cold war thriller but with a subtle shift in emphasis he created a comedy legend; the same is true of this film. Take away the soundtrack and the scenes involving David's cheerfully rotting victims and you could easily mistake it for a straight horror film; the Yorkshire locations, isolated villagers and gentleman doctor's lone investigation are all very Hammer studios... |

Stay on the road. Keep clear of the moors. |

Amazingly, the idea for American Werewolf in London came to director John Landis when he was working as a production assistant on the Clint Eastwood movie Kelly's Heroes (1970).
Easily the best Werewolf movie ever made, AWIL blends outrageous dark humour with gruesome and horrific scenes of carnage. Landis was (at the time) on a roll which showed no signs of abating and his masterful and astute directing delivered a visually impressive masterpiece of Horror cinema.
Taking the American-English culture clash to the max and throwing in a number of whacky and downright unfriendly characters, Landis pitches the tone to perfection.
Complemented by an almost perfect soundtrack and several stand out scares, AWIL induces both laughter and intense shock sometimes in the same scene.
The icing on... |
