Martin Scorsese directing a PG-rated family melodrama? As unexpected as that is, this empathetic journey to find new life and love has a dramatic intensity because of him, and also because of the illuminating Ellen Burstyn in the lead.

This film starts to show Martin Scorsese's greatness. The characters and emotions portrayed here are raw, gritty, and, overall, real. Not a "fun" film by any stretch, but an important one.
