I really liked Ricky Gervais here - his dry, British wit is perfect for a surly dentist who hates the world. The plot was too predictable with some great moments, but overall standard. Still, if you're a fan of Gervais, it's worth a look. |

Ricky Gervais does a lot with this formulaic, but enjoyable comedy about a Scrooge who finds love with the help of ghosts; the sentimental moments don't quite work, but it's consistently fun to watch. Final Grade: B

"Ghost Town" by Yojimbo |
|
An obnoxious and misanthropic dentist dies on the operating table and when he is revived finds he can communicate with the dead. Ghost Town is most definitely the Ricky Gervais show, which is no bad thing. Although it's got all the hallmarks of the rom com - the TV sitcom montage acoustic guitar soundtrack, the inevitable love interest and the over reliance on schmaltz to resolve the story - but it also is full of Gervais' trademark wit and one liners that will be familiar to anyone who has seen The Office, and especially Extras. The result is a bit like a cross between The Sixth Sense and Groundhog day; it's very easy to imagine Bill Murray in the part of Dr. Pincus and fans of his will not be disappointed. Unfortunately the last twenty minutes is the usual sappy life message crap and ju... |

Ghost Town, a Mr. E Movie Review |

Ghost Town, a Mr. E Movie Review
(Run time: 102 min. - Directed by: David Koepp - Starring: Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear, Tea Leoni)
Ghost Town, starring Ricky Gervais is a comedic love story mixed with a little of the after life. Ricky Gervais plays a great character who does as all good characters do and evolves perfectly throughout this movie into someone better. And, it doesn't hurt that his cool British accent is so thick and that his English-style wise cracks are as funny as hell.
OK, After a near death experience an uptight, jerk of a dentist named Bertram Pincus, Ricky Gervais, is able to see dead people. One of these dead people is Frank, played by Greg Kinnear, who now wants Bertram to help him to get rid of the man who is courting his widow, who's played by Tea Leoni. A... |

The cast is better than the script |
|
Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) doesn’t like people. The dentist has a disdain for pretty much the entire human race, but his life is changed by an unforeseen side-effect of a routine surgery.
The dentist goes in for a routine colonoscopy, dies for seven minutes on the table, and walks out with an ability to see and hear dead people. And New York it seems has more than its share of ghosts.
Pincus is hounded by the spirits needing closure led by recently deceased Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear) who wants Pincus to ruin his widow’s relationship with a lawyer. Pincus immediately falls for Gwen (Tea Leoni) and agrees, but most overcome his own personality and self-history to win her over.
A strong cast can do quite a lot for a so-so movie. Those unfamiliar with British actor Ricky Ge... |
