Three Jewish brother escape from Poland as the Nazis invade. They join forces with the Russian resistance in an attempt to build a village to house themselves and others being pursued and persecuted. -- Chris Kavan
Not a bad film by any means. It is a pretty typical Zwick film. Solid action, solid emotion, and a decent story. The problem is, that there was absolutely nothing special about this film other than it was a true story. Didn't make it good.
Defiance is the true story of Jewish brothers Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber who hid from the Nazis in the Belarussian forest and quickly found themselves with an entire community of fleeing refugees to protect. Edward Zwick has always been fond of telling stories about the triumph of the human spirit and has on occasion been guilty of over-egging the sentimental side of things to get his intended point across. Defiance is no exception, but thanks to some clever writing and a strong central performance by Daniel Craig, this film manages to pull itself back from the brink of schmaltz. When Craig mounted a white steed and gave a very Braveheart speech to his new subjects, I thought "Oh great...here we go again...", but soonafter when the people begin to starve, he promptly pulls out a Luge...
The movie was another reference for history fanatics. It depicts the struggles and hardship in the holocust era. Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber delivered a fine performance. But there were little defects on the action sequence. The starring roles clearly was spared from dangers during the gun fighting. Quite a few inter actions with the German soldiers. There were sequences when the escapes were unrealistic they should have been caught so obviously but still manage to be invisible with the Germans .The characters doesnt look emaciated nor frail. There forest life seemed easy. Jamie Bell was ok but didn't speak russian or Belarussian.
Over all another trivia or information added to my data bank. Entertainment wise , sad but amusing in a sense.
Defiance was a good, well-done film, and it exposes a true story that most people don't know about; the big Warsaw ghetto uprising and resistance of the Jews during the Holocaust, in WWII. I also read the book on which it was based, which was better, however.
This is an excellent film. I took a chance and bought it before I actually saw it, I dunno y I did that, but it was wroth it really. This is an awesome film and I wanna read the book now. Wish I woudla read teh book first.
