Based on the musical of the same name, a young bride is told she has a real father who is alive. The problem is that her mother does not know who it may be, but that it is between three men. The daughter sings songs and elaborate choreography to tell her story while the wedding takes place in a warm, beach type atmosphere.

One of the worst movies I have seen this year. Some of the music numbers are good (and familiar) but that doesn't make the movie good. Bad acting, bad story and too much singing. Only slightly better than Dreamgirls. Miss it. |

Here we go again |
|
I really enjoyed Mamma Mia! and you could tell the cast really enjoyed making it. The singing is good not great, Brosnan is kind of bad but its kind of endearing in him. If you hate Abba you obviously will not enjoy the music. It was nice to see Meryl Streep doing something where she gets to have fun and not be so serious. |

Engaging, but dopey |
|
An engaging, but dopey musical that celebrates the music of ABBA and the bonds of a mother and her daughter and the men in their lives; it's fun for awhile, but becomes repetitive and doesn't give enough of a satisfying conclusion. Final Grade: C+

Mamma Mia! Full of Talent and Laughs |
|
Mamma Mia! is a very lighthearted, funny musical that actually transferred well from stage to screen! Meryl Streep was surprisingly fantastic as Donna, whose daughter Sophie (a very talented Amanda Seyfried) is getting married and wants her father to walk her down the aisle. The potential fathers are so-so (Pierce Brosnan was perfect for the role except his singing skills), but other than the talent is exceptional. I'm mostly impressed by Amanda Seyfriend (mostly known for 'Mean Girl' and the HBO show 'Big Love'), who really shows Hollywood what she's made of in this. Overall, this is one of the best musical movies I've seen in a while. |

A Musical That Celebrates Flaws |
|
I thought I would dislike this movie because I’m not a fan of musicals nor am I a big fan of ABBA (even though I’m familiar with some of their songs). What saved and (surprisingly enough) elevated this picture is its sheer enthusiasm to entertain its audiences. It’s not afraid to be silly or too light or even feature some bad singing. It takes a lot of courage from the director (Phyllida Lloyd) and writer (Catherine Johnson) for the film to embrace its inconsistencies, flaws, and logic so I must commend them for it. Even though the film is full of stars such as Amanda Seyfried and her three potential fathers (Stellan Skarsgård, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth), the actors that truly shine are Meryl Streep (as Seyfried’s single mother) and her two best friends: Julie Walters and Christine Bara... |
