Director and star Cheryl Dunye provides a unique perspective not just for female audiences, but also an inside look at the black lesbian experience. It’s simultaneously told through her character’s hectic love life and the secondhand anecdotes about a near mythical film actress known only as the Watermelon Woman. Admittedly Dunye is working on a minuscule budget and the drama is soap opera-level. But she displays a resourcefulness as a storyteller. Genevieve Turner is remarkably charming as her love interest.
