Being first doesn't guarantee it's the best, but "They Live By Night" was an early influence on both the American crime-romance and cinema of the French New Wave.

A well acted thriller that serves as a prototype for later movies like Gun Crazy, Bonnie and Clyde, Badlands, True Romance, I could go on. While Farley Granger and Cathy O'Donnell are good in their roles, the story does become too familiar for its own good.
