Plot: The Western that showcases some of the best work of the Director (Peckinpah), and its two stars (Scott and MacRea). Two aging former lawmen are hired to transport gold from the minefields to a city bank. One of them has a plan to steal the gold and when he can't convince his partner that they take the gold as payment for a lifetime of thankless duty, he takes it himself. His redemption and the wonderful details that show the men trying to confront their growing irrelevance in a changing world make for a moving film. This is a good primer for the director's masterpiece with the same theme, The Wild Bunch. -- Simon
