The neorealist and observational approach that Rossellini takes in this series of vignettes allows the themes and emotions the film touches on to be more apparent. Rossellini used mostly non-actors and the simplicity of the reactions of his cast give the film a pseudo-documentary, fly-on-the-wall feel that is striking.
