Plot Outline:

With the Depression in full steam, a rather ditzy socialite picks up a vagrant, Godfrey, and hires him on as the family butler. He struggles with understanding the nutty actions of the idle rich family, even as the butler and socialite fall in love - but the fallout from falling for one of the servants may be too much... but there is more to Godfrey than meets the eye. -- Chris Kavan

This kind of comedy of manners is the kind of thing that would be made as a vehicle for Adam Sandler these days and would therefore be mindless, hateful junk. But starring the likes of Carole Lombard and William Powell and sporting the kind of witty and insightful script they just don't write any more, it's a joy. Let down only by a rather unconvincing ending it's otherwise a charming screwball comedy from the old school.

A really delightful film that is as charming as it is entertaining. William Powell gets some great one-liners and the film is also stocked full of hilarious supporting characters, as well. Carole Lombard's unhinged devotion to Godfrey is, to me, the heart of the film and what makes a lot of the madcap action so funny.

Pretty darn good. William Powell is flawless and Carole Lombard - is crazy and is perfect for all her character flaws. If only all movies could be this funny and crazy and timeless. IF you haven't seen it, watch it now and don't blame the date on your reluctance for watching this movie.
