The Lady Vanishes...again...*YAWN* ?

It seems that in the late 70s and early 80s, the British became interested in seeing Alfred Hitchcock's early classics remade. The first was The Thirty-Nine Steps with Robert Powell and now this with Cybil Shepard leading an all-star cast. Shepard is as beautiful as ever-the first shot of her is her bottom as she flaunts herself on top a table wearing a lovely white dress...and wearing a fake Hitler moustache. Yes, that's the first hint after five minutes of opening credits actually shot on location in Germany that at first make you think it'll be classy this remake is gonna be a homage to 1930s screwball comedies aside from Hitchcockian thrillers. And it meshes well together as poorly as you'd expect it to.

If you watch the 1979 version of "The Lady Vanishes" as a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic, you will probably not be able to sit through it. But pretend that the original doesn't exist, and this one provides some slight entertainment.

It's probably one of the most misguided attempts at a comedic mystery-thriller, though. Cybill Shepherd is awful, and her interaction with Elliott Gould is sometimes excruciating. But if you are doing other things, it's not unwatchable.

Personally, I just don't care for that zany, madcap, slapstick humor that inappropiately surrounds the story in this version. It would have to be in better hands than these to succeed for me.

That said, it really wasn't as bad as I'd heard in all the stories about the demise of the great Hammer Films, just …
