Pulpy sci-fi espionage thriller that's so full of twists and turns you soon don't know whether you're coming or going. It often seems that the plot is unnecessarily convoluted just for the sake of appearing more clever than it really is, but Lucy Liu adds some much welcome glamour. |

I was reading Sci-Fi in the cradle so I guessed the ending early on - DH was not and did not. It was great on mood and creating its world, but the storyline was thin. I could watch Jeremy Northam paint a fence and be happy! |

Cypher review |
|
Despite stunning visual effects and a wonderful idea, poor direction and screenplay can ruin any sci-fi flick. Rita Foster (Liu) meets Morgan Sullivan (Northam). Morgan experiences various scenarios in which his identity changes. The settings and plot were brilliant. Its direction and pace could have been better. This is a prime example of putting too much on the idea and effects rather than the characters. First gadget used to influence the mind of Sullivan reminded this reviewer of A Clockwork Orange. It lacks the dark humor of the said film. Moreover, the film however also misses with regards to entertain value compared to the influential Kubrick futuristic movie aforementioned. Cypher could have been better since its premise was interesting. |
