In turn-of-the-century Sweden, a dying woman's sisters visit her at her country home. However, the sisters are consumed by selfishness and fear, while the woman's maid does her best to comfort her in her final days.

This is one of Bergman's most personal films, but also one of his most painful. It features frayed acting that carries its nerves on the surface and demonstrates the depths of human monstrosity. It's almost a dramatic horror film - captivating, albeit somewhat depressing to watch.
