Cobra Verde begins with a great opening. A vengeful farmer (Kinski) becomes a bandit and later journeys to Africa to become a feared slave trader. The sets and location shots are great. Kinski is great at making his often quite villainous protagonist nevertheless interesting. But the story is honestly boring and just wanders.

Once again, Werner Herzog manages to craft and adventure story that combines epic action with some introspective views into the human psyche. The scenery and set pieces mirror the tropical majesty of Fitzcarraldo or Aguirre. Herzog's go-to actor to portray obsession, Klaus Kinski, turns in another gloriously demented performance, as well.
