Those who are familiar with Cronenberg's 'body horror' style will find much in gross make-up f/x and shocks. Though, all this comes out of a tight story that is much easier to comprehend than his later horror films and it moves along at a swift pace. The psychosomatic angle is a deep integration of the story and interesting in it's own right.

This movie should have been aborted. Cronenberg reportedly wrote it during an acrimonious divorce and the flick is rife with misogynistic ire. Avoid it and it's relentless psycho-allegorizing. Unless you fear midgets.
