Plot Outline:

A novice visits her uncle shortly before taking her vows. Events lead her to refuse her vows, and instead to stay on at her (now deceased) uncle's manor with his son. The virtuous woman takes in beggars at the manor until things get out of hand in Luis Bunuel's brilliant satire of bourgeois values and the Catholic church.

Bunuel assumes a depressing view on charity - one in which the good works of others are misplaced by being bestowed upon undeserving and wretched creatures - but it's a powerful and thought-provoking one, nonetheless. Differing from the director's more surreal work, this is a pretty linear film with some fearless performances and symbolism.

I can see why this caused such an uproar for the Catholic church - Buñuel certainly doesn't have any problem with startling imagery (including a twisted take on "The Last Supper") but beliefs aside, this is truly a remarkable and powerful film and could be considered the pinnacle of Buñuel's work.

Beautiful Blasphemy

Viridiana (Silvia Pinal) is a young novice about to take her vows. Her only living relative, her uncle Don Jaime (Fernando Rey), invites her over to his state to spend a few days there. Even though Viridiana is reluctant, for she has met the man only one and considers him to be cold and distant, she agrees after her Mother Superior tells her to accept the invitation. At her uncle’s state she meets and befriends his servants, and slowly starts getting closer to Don Jaime. At the midpoint of the film, after a series of events that shake the perceived normality, Viridiana sets out to help the socially outclassed, wanting to offer them a little “human warmth”. But she’ll soon find out that things aren’t as simple and as black or white as she was thought in the convent.

There’s a lot to be ...
