I have seen both, The Ring and Ringu. Between the two of them, I like Ringu better, however, I felt "The Ring" was a little more scarier. Both of these are well done, so I would watch both. The only thing I didn't like was the boy in The Ring. He was very strange. The Ring develops Samara's character a little bit better with the history behind Samara's home life. However both of the Samara's in the two movies are different. If you like psychological horror, I would watch Ringu first, then watch The Ring. No gory scenes.

A foreign film that really has a cool premise for a horror story. There was a time when video tapes were huge, way before mpegs, laser discs or DVD’s. This has one of the scariest background music with really shocking moments that would make you jump out of your seat during the theater. The cinematography and tempo in storytelling was just adequate. I was fortunate to view this in a movie theater to really experience the crowd’s reaction to this frightening masterpiece. It may have been one of the scariest films I have seen, I won’t tell any details but it might change your views of TV and videotapes after viewing this.

The american version is so much better imo

Being a fan of the americanized version of this story aka The Ring i was told by many to watch the Japanese version as it was ten times more scarier. After watching this i will say there was one moment in the whole film that made me jump and that was it. The japanese version is pretty much the same story only weaker in my opinion. I am no stranger to foreign films expecially in the horror genre as some are quite frankly what everyone says they are and that is more terrifying than persay the ones we see here in North America. The director Hideo Nakata gives us one thing thats worth recommending in this film and that is one scary soundtrack however the rest just falls short. I will be seeking out the japanese sequel to this as well as i want to see what they did with that as well.
