A semi-autobiographical tale that is strikingly beautiful, both visually and emotionally. If I could define this film by any word, it would be freedom. This film is evidence that great storytelling is, at heart, visual. |

An influential film by French master François Truffaut. This was the first Truffaut film I had seen, and it was a great experience. The story and characters come together perfectly. It's simple yet makes an impact. |

Somehow, I don't like Francois Truffaut's movies about children as much. I wasn't wild about this one, but I'm glad I gave him another chance. I've liked the rest of his movies, except of course the ones about children: The Wild Child and Small Change. |

The film is one of the most imporant technically speaking ever. It pionered in a lot of stuff, and somewhat influenced in the rest of the french new wave, and some american directors (very few). Besides that, the story is charming, touching, and timeless. Wonderful. |

The 400 Blows (Les quatre cents coups) review |
|
Sourpuss is the nickname given to the teacher of a class where the boys mock him during class. Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud) has a cynical cheating mother with an optimistic father who cares for his son. Subjects of parenting, survival, fidelity, juvenile delinquents, future circumstances of a location, friendship, trust and improper education were tackled throughout the well-directed film. Score was delightful and direction was fluid to keep the viewer glued to the screen. Humor was really funny and character development was detailed and clear to keep you engaged throughout the movie.
If it weren’t for the sincere acting of Jean-Pierre Léaud and vivid direction this picture would have not been effective and entertaining. Cinematography was superb from the myriad of angles... |
