I usually detest John Grisham's brand of airport populist courtroom trash, but an impressive cast elevates this above the usual white liberal take on southern racism. The characters are wall to wall cliches, but decent character actors keep them interesting, particularly SLJ and Donald Sutherland. |

It starts where a 10-year-old Tonya Hailey is viciously raped and beaten by two white racists—James Louis "Pete" Willard and Billy Ray Cobb. Carl Lee Hailey, recalls a similar case from the year before wherein four white men raped a black girl in a nearby town. Billy Ray Cobb's brother, Freddy Lee Cobb, is seeking revenge for Carl Lee's killing of his brother. A remarkable plot with endearing portrayals from almost every cast. A Time to Kill is a smart drama with believable situations. |

There's a lot to like about this movie, but the main star is the conviction and chemistry displayed by the leads. There really isn't a bad performance in the movie and that makes the racial issues that the film investigates more thought-provoking, as they are handled seriously and with poise. |

Now imagine that she is white!!! |
|
First rate adaptation of a top notch John Grisham novel directed by Joel Shumaker about a revengeful father (Samuel L Jackson) on trial for the murder of two white supremist brothers charged with the brutal rape and attempted murder of Jackson's 10 year old daughter. This movie is a must see as it deals with the racial tension in Mississippi during the trail. Matthew McConaughey becomes a bonified star after his portrayal of the Attorney hired to defend Jackson. The supporting cast includes great performances by Sandra Bullock , Kevin Spacey , Oliver Platt , Charles S Dutton , Keifer and Donald Sutherland , and Ashley Judd. Great acting , screenplay , and directing helps this movie land at #4 in my top 100!!! You will not be dissapointed in this movie!! |
