"Three Kings" takes its material serious enough that it manages to be both a satirical and a sincere portrait of the Gulf War.

A mixture of stylish direction, genre clashing, and random music selection, makes this one fast paced entertainer. The plot is original and unpredictable. It's constantly switching from comedy, to action, to drama, sometimes all at once and without hesitation. Quite a fun watch.

"Three Kings" is a strange mixing of genres that somehow works itself into an effective and thought-provoking war film. With moments of dark comedy aimed at showing some of the more absurdist aspects of the Gulf War and some moments of poignant clarity, the film is always exciting and interesting. The unlikely trio of Clooney, Ice Cube, and Wahlberg are all superb and share a tension-driven camraderie that adds sparks to every scene. I also liked director Spike Jonze's drawl-heavy supporting character.

Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg) has just been recognized on television and became a father. Major Archie Gates (George Clooney) fools around with a journalist and discovers a certain map that interests him. Staff Sergeant Chief Elgin (Ice Cube) is a religious soldier who used to be an airline baggage handler. The three together with the aid of Private First Class Conrad Vig (Spike Jonze) and Specialist Walter Wogeman (Jamie Kennedy), find out a secret that could change their lives.

Direction was skillful utilizing hand-held cameraswith Ektachrome transparency stock techniques and had excellent character background. A film of maltreatment of civilians, family, violence of war, death, compassion, violence of war and false hopes, it also mixes drama, wonderful action and comedic …

"Three Kings" by Yojimbo

When a group of US soldiers find a map to Saddam's horde of stolen Kuwaiti gold during operation Desert Storm, they decide to go rogue and steal it. Kind of like a cross between Ocean's Eleven and Jarhead, Three Kings is the Iraq "war"'s answer to Kelly's Heroes. Featuring a fine cast and nicely offbeat script, the film starts off really well with plenty of laughs and surreal situations based within the usual "absurdity of war" framework, but when the script decides to throw in some politics it starts to flounder somewhat. There are some valid points made and it's all very well meaning, but Russell's fear of putting the boot in compromises the message and it all ends up a little half-arsed. The worst example is the fact that the point that America was bombing Iraqi civilians pretty much …

Fans of Three Kings should check out In Our Name

Fans of Three Kings should check out a brilliant new British film called ‘In Our Name’ opening this Friday 10th December in Curzon cinemas and countrywide via the new Curzon-On-Demand video streaming (https://www.curzoncinemas.com/film_on_demand/ - great for those of us who don’t live near an arthouse cinema!). It stars Joanne Froggett (Anna from Downton Abbey) who won a BIFA (British Independent Film Award) for her role as a soldier returning from a tour in Iraq and struggling to re-adjust to family life and cope with after effects of her experiences in a war-zone. It’s a really thought-provoking and tense, edge-of-your-seat drama; culturally significant, reminiscent of Ken Loach-style social realism, it is inspiring for filmmakers as it was made on a very low budget by newcomer …
