An appropriately camp sensibility to remaking the cult classic science fiction film doesn't save this expensive misfire. The opening scene shows promise with a dark edge and acerbic wit. But that fizzles quickly in favor of overblown comic set pieces and sloppy political commentary. To Frank Oz's credit, the production design does make the town of Stepford seem so perfect that it is almost alien and eerie.

Turns the story of the original into a slightly dark satire. I usually love these sorts of films, but the humor here just didn't entirely work for me. There are a few good scenes.

I thought this movie was just campy enough to be charming but not too charming you wanted to throw up from all the insincerity. Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler, and Roger Bart work magically together as the city-folk who are completely confused and appalled by humanistic qualities. Matthew Broderick plays the perfect "husband underneath the shadow of his wife" and does so slyly but with truth and humor. To top off the cast, Christopher Walken and Glenn Close add their otherwordly embodiment of perfection in ways that they only could. A very funny movie, though not the best, certainly, from director Frank Oz.
