Contrived schmaltzy rubbish that purports to tackle race issues but at best is superficial, at worst exploitative in its trite treatment of a serious issue.

'Soul Man' is quite an impressive misstep of merriness, not least because it gathers such terrific and comically gifted performers as Leslie Nielson, James Earl Jones, and C. Thomas Howell and gives them absolutely no material to work with, apart from the basic concept that 'white people are not cool'. You don't BLOODY SAY! The film hardly warranted the infamy its use of blackface brought it, but 'Soul Man' still deserves it's fair share of spiteful criticism for it's ultimately rather spectacular failure at being funny.

I found this movie to both, hilarious and moving. It's a great, though unbelievable, story.

I don't know about anyone else but I had no problem distinguishing that C. Thomas Howell was a white dude. I don't bother yourself with this one.
