'Soul Man' is quite an impressive misstep of merriness, not least because it gathers such terrific and comically gifted performers as Leslie Nielson, James Earl Jones, and C. Thomas Howell and gives them absolutely no material to work with, apart from the basic concept that 'white people are not cool'. You don't BLOODY SAY! The film hardly warranted the infamy its use of blackface brought it, but 'Soul Man' still deserves it's fair share of spiteful criticism for it's ultimately rather spectacular failure at being funny. |
