Samantha "Sam" Baker is obsessed with Jake Ryan. Sam and Ted talk about her adoration. Jake makes a bet with Ted. It is considered one of the best high school films because of its themes of maturity and crushes. The only reservations this reviewer had were the depiction of the Asian exchange student and usage of underwear to earn money. A few scenes may have been too childish, nevertheless the amazing soundtrack and Ringwald's performance are highlights of the film. Sixteen Candles is a decent romantic comedy and is not at par with the rest of the director's films.

Still fun and hilarious today. One of John Hughes's best.

John Hughes at his most brutally funny and sarcastic. Great 80's tunes and nostalgia on full display. Somewhere in here, there's a sly story about how great and rough it is to be a teenager and that still holds up today.

The thing that I love about John Hughes' movies is that everyone, and I mean everyone, in the movie goes through some type of major coming of age change. I like that.

Samantha (Molly Ringwald) has a crush on the most popular guy in school, and the geekiess guy has a crush on her. And to make matters worse - her family forgets her birthday, as they are too wrapped up in organizing her older sister's wedding. This movie was a big let down. After loving The Breakfast Club, and Pretty In Pink, I assumed this would be just as great. But I was wrong. The story line and the basics of this movie is good, but lots of it is too silly, and try-hard funny for my liking. Like, for example, the asian exchange student - that was just stupid. They chucked him into the movie, made him act like an idiot, trying make the movie funny, but it didn't work!

This movie started my love for 80s teen flicks. Of course it helped that I was a teen when this came out. Although I never understood John Hughes' love for Molly Ringwald and I don't care for her in any film, this movie is still good in spite of her. Anthony Michael Hall is adorable and funny as the geek. Lots of great lines in this one that we still quote today -- 20 years later.
