Plot Outline:
|
Based on the true story of Australian pianist David Helfgott, this delightful movie charts the early and traumatic early years. Telling the story in flashback we see David as he grows up and into a child prodigy while his father abuses him and his siblings with the memory of his childhood in Europe and the loss of his family in the concentration camps. David finally breaks away from his father and goes away to study overseas, he later suffers a breakdown and returns to Australia and a life in an institution. Many years later he is released and through several twists of fate (in reality even more unlikely than film portrays) he starts playing a piano in a bar before finally returning to the concert hall

This is an exciting biopic with the right blend of touching and triumphant moments. Geoffrey Rush proves what a nuanced actor he is, earning his Oscar soundly with a completely involving performance as the autistic musical genius. |

A good film with a great soundtrack about the life of a pianist with many problems. I liked the first half a lot more where you really saw him turn into what he is when he is older. The older half did not work because it was much to fast and skipped around to much. As in he got to that mental hospital instantly and then got married pretty instantly. I liked the piano scenes and the interactions with his father even though they were historically inaccurate. |

A disturbing look at the life of pianist-genius David Helfgott. Although a dark story, both Rush (the adult Helfgott) and Alex Rafalowicz (the young Helfgott) do an amazing job brining Helfgott to life. |
