Hal Larson (Jack Black) is a shallow person who only enjoys dating attractive women together with his friend Mauricio Wilson (Jason Alexander). A life coach does something to Hal which changes his perception about women. He then meets Rosemary Shanahan (Gwyneth Paltrow), a fun, smart nice and funny girl. Themes of inner beauty and respecting deformities were well represented. Some hilarious lines: Mauricio -"She takes the whole bakery, Hal." Hal - "Hmmm, toughie. What about the remaining breast? Is it big?" This film will definitely put a smile on your face. Though it had a few unbelievable and fantastic scenes, Shallow Hal brings out the laughs while showing it has a heart as well. |

Less crude than the Farrelly's other films. This one sends a message that is definitely heard (and seen) loud and clear, which makes for some sweet moments. However, it uses up its unique premise too early and boils down to rom-com territory and the laughs are not near as loud and often as in some of their other films. Still a decent movie. |

One of the Farrelly Brothers' better films, sometimes replacing gross-out humor with genuine heart. Jack Black and Paltrow have an odd chemistry onscreen that actually seems pretty believable and, though the film still contains its share of lame, slapstick-y jokes, it pulls a little at your heart, too. |

Classic Farrelly |

Jack Black is one of my favorite actors, he has a very strange sense of humor, and it shows with each of his different characters. Black and Paltrow were great and Jason Alexander was hilarious. The movie is about a guy named Hal who is a rather decent guy, but he has a problem. When picking women he only looks at the outer beauty of a woman...this is explained in the opening scene. Hal gets trapped in an elevator with a guy who opens Hal's mind to the inner beauty of women. Hal then suddenly finds the more unattractive girls perfect for him and this leads to some funny scenes. This also leads him to Rose Mary a gal he finds perfect, but everyone else sees a 300lb gal. This movie says a lot about how shallow our society is and does a good job of it. Though I don't think every unattractive... |
