New Movies to Crave: Rise of the Schmucks, Zac Efron Extra Maudlin

In all reality, the only film that's coming out this week that holds any interest for me is:

1) Dinner for Schmucks - Paul Rudd and Steve Carrell are two of my favorite comedians. Granted this is yet another remake (of the French film Le dîner de cons) but in this case, I'm guessing I won't mind. The humor is less gross-out and more deadpan - and I don't think it will equal the success of The Hangover, but as far as comedies go, it should fit the bill. It should be close, but I think this will edge out Inception for the weekend.

2) If you feel like you want your emotions saturated to the point of breaking, then the Zac Efron-helmed Charlie St. Cloud is just for you. I mean it's about a guy who makes a promise to his kid brother, who then dies in an accident, and comes back each day to keep the promise. But, wait, the guy falls in love and suddenly must choose between his little brother and his new love - oh, the humanity! I'm sure this will draw a mostly young female audience, and probably a hefty Christian audience as well, but you would literally have to drag me kicking and screaming - or drugged - to watch this one. Still, I predict it will sadly end up somewhere in the top five.

3) Desperately trying to coax the family audience out again will be Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. I don't give it much of a chance seeing how Despicable Me is still burning up the box office. I honestly have only a vague recollection of the original Cats & Dogs - this sequel almost seems like it should have been direct-to-DVD.

4) In limited release is Get Low about a man who throws a funeral party for himself. With some big names - Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and a quirky story, this could be potential Oscar material. If it can pull anywhere near the numbers that The Kids Are All Right has done, it's a good sign.
