Most of us know it. 2010 sucks for movies. But for now, let’s look at the movies that sucked the least (seriously though, these are good movies).
5) Brooklyn’s Finest
Not an outstanding, 4 star movie, but I did like it compared to a lot of crap out there this year. The acting is quite good and Fuqua does do a great job of showing the nitty gritty of Brooklyn. I compare this to the poor man’s “Crash.” You probably have barely heard of this movie.
Oscar Chances: 0 and it probably doesn’t deserve any to be honest.
4) The Killer Inside me
I was lucky enough to check this out on Movies on Demand the same day it was in limited release. While I admit that that fact might affect how I liked this movie, The Killer Inside me is still shocking and well done. It drug a few times but was satisfying at the conclusion of the movie (which is saying a lot compared to some films). A very nice surprise.
Oscar Chances: 20% chance for Casey Afleck. He was damn good in this movie. For best picture though, very unlikely.
3) The Book of Eli
To me, this is a very good movie. Acting has little to do with it (though there isn’t much action). I love the concept, the sci-fi nature, and the religious undertones. A little too simple for uppity Oscar voters, but so was Cloverfield and I have that in my top movies of 2008 list!
Oscar Chances: 0 chance. Came out in January, is way too simple for anyone that votes to even “stoop that low.”
2) Shutter Island
Some call this predictable. This time I didn’t care. It was more about the journey, more about the cinematography, and more about the performance. Leonardo Dicaprio knocks it out of the park. Yes many could see the ending but if you look closely around the web, there’s still much debate as to what really happened at the end. Doesn’t make my top 100 but still very good for such a bad year.
Oscar Chances: Great for Leo and pretty good for Shutter Island. Remember, 10 films are nominated and if this ain’t one of them it better be a damn good year. I could see some art house crap come out that could knock this great movie out, but it would be a shame (crappy movies like The Reader come to mind).
1) Inception
To be honest, I am still not really sure how good this movie is. I have only seen it once and you can’t truly judge a great movie until you have seen it at least twice. Some say it is complex, some say it’s simple – I don’t really care. I only care that I loved it. So until something else blows me away this year, it will remain #1.
Oscar Chances: I don’t think the Academy likes Chris Nolan. Memento and The Dark Knight – neither were nominated for much. It will probably get several tech awards and maybe a Globe nom but I don’t see much else for it unfortunately.
Next up for me – most anticipated movies left for 2010.

Wow love this list! I totally agree with the top 3, I haven`t seen the others yet but I thought Inception was the best movie of the year so far :) Leonardo DiCaprio should definitely get an Oscar this year. I hope there will be more good movies later this year xD
