Grown Ups Prefer Toys, Knight Can't Win the Day

With the best 10-day showing for an animated feature, Pixar's Toy Story 3 continued it's box office domination with a $59 million weekend. Although falling 47%, in its second week the film is already the fifth-highest grossing film of the year, and is expected to pass Shrek Forever After today.

Meanwhile, the Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Kevin James and Rob Schneider ensemble Grown Ups nabbed second with a $41 million debut. The push to see the film from the stars has been huge, but the bottom line was a modest return. But Adam Sandler and co. had a better weekend than Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

With a $20.5 Million weekend or $27.8 since opening Wednesday, Knight & Day was the worst opening for Cruise since 1992's Far and Away. With Twilight, Airbender and Inception all on the horizon, the odds of Knight & Day surpassing $100 million look grim.

The weekend couldn't stand up to last year's Transformers assault and overall business down 18%. Twi-hards should help things out, with a holiday weekend coming up, Airbender could perform well, but with a crowded market, it could land anywhere.
