My Take On the Worst of the Worst Movies Ever, Part 1

By Chris Kavan - 03/15/13 at 11:13 PM CT

For every great (or even good) movie released, there is a stinker waiting in the wings. Some movies clearly fall into the "so bad it's good" category. Other are just plain bad. These are the movies you want to erase from your memory, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind-style, but you can't. The Golden Raspberry Awards was an impromptu creation by American copywriter and publicist John J. B. Wilson in 1980. In the following years, the "Razzie" awards took off and today are nearly as popular as the Oscars (they are awarded the day before the major awards show).

Bad movies sometimes win Oscars, but terrible movies often win Razzies. I must say, I'm impressed out o the 35 total Worst Picture Razzies awarded (two years were ties between two films) - I have managed to only see 17 of them - many of the most well-known (Gigli, Swept Away, Freddy Got Fingered_ I've avoided because I know better. Being that there are just 17, this first blog is going to be short (just two films). I'm counting down from what I consider the best to the absolute worst films of the bunch. I hope you enjoy!

17) MOMMIE DEAREST

This was not only named the worst picture for 1981- it was awarded the worst film of the decade for the 1980s. So why is it my favorite worst film? The camp. Faye Dunaway is completely over-the-top as Joan Crawford. And, of course, the immortal line NO... MORE... WIRE HANGERS! RAAAAAAAAGE! Compared to most of the films on this list, I have no problem watching this movie - heck, I own this movie. Haters gonna hate - but I think this movie is a lot of fun in a demented way.

16) RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II

I mean it's Rambo - brainless action - lots of bodies, bullets and explosions. It's not high art, for certain, but does it really deserve the distinction of the worst film of 1985? Eh - I could sit through any brainless action movie - 1980s or any other decade. They're forgettable, testosterone-filled pieces of fluff. They leave your mind as soon as the credits roll. Not great, but certainly not the worst of all time, either.

I can promise you, the movies do get so much worse... but I'm doing these in chunks, so stay tuned!

The opinions of those behind the 'Razzies' must have changed drastically over the years, if these are some of their fist 'worst' picks.

Remember - these are based off the Razzie-award winning films - not my Personal worst of the worst (see my worst film list for those). These are the "Word of the Worst" as determined by the professional movie community - I'm just commenting on their picks and how they match up with my opinion.

Sorry Chris. although valuing your opinion on most movies I can't go along with you here as I loved both of these films. I am still a huge Stallone supporter even to this day

First Blood Part II? Really?! I agree that it is just another mindless action movie, but it's a completely enjoyable and crowd-pleasing one at that. Nothing wrong there.
