New in Theaters November 09: Bond is Back with Skyfall

Last week Hollywood chalked up a big win with the northeast returning to a bit of normalcy and boosting Wreck-It Ralph to the top of the box office, with Flight a strong second place. I have a feeling the next few weeks are going to have big returns as well, as there are some franchises with strong offering for fervent fans coming out. This week there is only one new wide-released film, but I have a feeling that it's going to make a huge impact with audiences.

SKYFALL For those who don't follow international markets, Skyfall has been breaking records left and right. I admit, I was disappointed with Quantum of Solace - I actually found it a bit boring. I have a good feeling that they learned from their mistakes and Skyfall will be back to the Bond of old - that is, more action without sacrificing a good story or memorable villains. For those with short memories, recall that in 2010 this film was delayed indefinitely due to the troubles at MGM (which also affected such titles as Cabin in the Woods, the Red Dawn remake and The Hobbit). All of those troubled films have seen or will premiere this year - and I have a strong feeling that for Skyfall the wait will be worth it. By all accounts Javier Bardem is a worthy addition to the cadre of villains in the Bond series. Ben Whishaw brings Q back into the fold. Plus, you have your Bond girls in the form of Naomie Harris and newcomer Bérénice Marlohe. Heck, even the theme song by Adele sounds better than most Bond songs released in the past decade or two. Even the story sounds intriguing - M has her past come back to a haunt her (and MI6) while Bond is more rogue agent this time around trying to fix the very serious problem - mainly that all the British agents are in danger of being revealed to the world (or whoever has the most money). While that also kind of sounds like the same story in the original Mission: Impossible (remember the NOC list?), I have a feeling this is going to turn out much different. Bond is back, and I'm more than ready to see what he has in store for us this time.

While I could throw in Lincoln - I will save that for next week when it hits nationwide - but I wouldn't be surprised if it makes some pretty big waves in limited release. I have a feeling that Skyfall will easily dominate the weekend - but Wreck-It Ralph still has a good chance of bringing in decent numbers thanks to targeting a much different audience. I'll see you Sunday with the final results.
