New Movies to Crave: Avengers Assemble for Monster Weekend Opening

After last week's completely lackluster box office, May 4th, 2012 brings new hope in the form of a superhero mashup that has already stormed the international box office and looks to do the same in America.

1) The Avengers is shaping up to be not only the biggest movie of the year so far, but some are even saying it stands a good chance of breaking the all-time opening record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. The reviews have been mostly positive, and anticipation is high, so it definitely stands a chance at reaching the $170 million opening - if it doesn't, it will surely be close to that mark. What is certain is the opening of The Avengers will gross more than all movies combined made last weekend. However, that also means that everyone else is going to be fighting over the scraps.

2) There is one movie that dares open opposite the superhero juggernaut. That movie is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel but, unless you happens to be a card-carrying member of the AARP and also appreciate British humour. As much as the cast looks like a whose who of talent: Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and, carrying the torch for the younger genenration, Dev Patel - I don't foresee this having much impact at the box office. Although as counter-programming to a bombastic action film, it isn't a bad move, I'm just guessing it won't draw that big of crowd.

I know what my plans are for this weekend - I'll be back on Sunday to see just how big of opening The Avengers will score.
