New Movies to Crave: Get Lost in The Grey or Hang Out with a Man on a Ledge

It's been a good start to the 2012 movie season so far; Liam Neeson and Sam Worthington hope to keep these good times rolling as their respective films lead the charge this weekend.

1) On the surface, The Grey looks like Alive vs. that part in The Day After Tomorrow where wolves attack people. Yet even with the wolves in the picture, I have a feeling The Grey is more than meets the eye, if only because Liam Neeson has that air of respect about him. Just like Taken, he's a man on a mission - but in this case it's simply surviving - the wolves may not be the most realistic portrayal of wild animals, however the ride looks plenty interesting.

2) Winner of the laziest movie title of the year (yes, I'm calling it now), Man on a Ledge features... a man on a ledge - well, and also a heist, a man desperately trying to clear his name and Elizabeth Banks as a psychologist/negotiator. It's all very exciting, but I also have a feeling they're trying to pack way too much in one film. My guess is it's going to start off with a bang but end up with a whimper. Probably a prime candidate for rental, but I don't see myself waiting in line for this.

3) If you want a bit of higher-brow fare, the Oscar-nominated Glenn Close walks like a man (and looks like one too) in Albert Nobbs. This is the kind of film, like The Artist, that does great with critics and small art house cinemas but I have a feeling won't find a vast general audience. Despite its credentials I have a feeling that this film, like The Artist, will only enjoy modest numbers with a somewhat expanded nationwide release.

4) Finally, as counter programming to all the testosterone currently on the big screen, Katherine Heigl and Jason O'Mara team up for One for the Money. For some reason, the plot alone reminds me a lot of The Bounty Hunter (but with the male/female roles reversed). Seeing as it's the only romantic comedy to come out in quite awhile, it may boost numbers, but reading about how generic the story plays out, it better hope audiences are really desperate for one.

We'll see if Grey and Ledge can continue to set a good pace for 2012 - I'll you you Sunday with all the gory details.
