New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: Enjoy Your Final Destination with Apollo 18

After the huge push right before Christmas, it looks like the new releases are being dialed down for New Year's. In fact, unless you happen to be a fan of questionable horror films, you may as well go to the theater or stay home with a bottle of champagne.

1) I was hoping we were finally done with this particular series, but apparently death just isn't in the mood to give up so easily. Final Destination 5 once again brings us a group of lucky individuals who escape certain death (this time avoiding a suspension bridge collapse) only to have fate catch up with them as they die horrible, horrible deaths in fun and exciting ways. Hey, at least Tony Todd is back this time around. I gave up on the whole thing two sequels ago - much like Saw, I think it's overstayed its welcome.

2) Another band-wagon films, Apollo 18 takes the "found footage" genre where no man has gone before: space, or more aptly, the moon. Answering the question of why we haven't returned to the moon after all these years, and because making a movie about balancing the government budget would be boring, we find out there was a secret mission to the moon that ended with disaster. This was one that was shifted around so many times, I didn't think it would see a 2011 release. It did and it was unspectacular to say the least. This might garner a Netflix look if I'm really bored one day, but I can't I'm very excited about the prospect.

On the Blu-Ray front, you have one excellent documentary and one Vicious biography. Up front, although it has already come out on DVD, Buck finally finds its way to high definition. The story behind a real-live horse whisperer has gotten a lot of attention and is included on numerous year-end lists as one the best documentaries to see. I've been trying to expand my documentary horizons, and this is one I would put on my list to watch. If you prefer your films with a bit of attitude, then join Sid & Nancy as they live fast and die young. While this is not the Criterion release of the film, those who enjoy punk rock and emotional highs and lows will feel right at home. Long on my list of films to watch, even if I'm sure they don't get all the details right, this is one biography that is sure to be anything but dry.

There isn't much else to say - but feel free to head on over the FilmCrave New DVD Releases and FilmCrave New Blu-Ray Releases pages to check out all the other films coming out this week.
