New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: Rango Tangles with an Insidious Lincoln Lawyer

It's the battle between kid-friendly fare, courtroom drama and the little horror film that could in this week's lineup.

1) Leading the charge is the Johnny Depp-voiced Rango. I still think out of all the animated films this year, this is the one that interests me the most. I have heard it moves a bit slow, but I'm willing to give is a shot. At least to me it looks much more interesting than Cars 2 or Rio.

2) A close second would be the horror film with a small filming budget, huge marketing push and amazing box office results. That would be Insidious, from the same team who brought Paranormal Activity to the big screen (also to amazing box office results). I have some high hopes that it will bring some scares or at least be creepy enough to sustain itself. Horror doesn't have to be reserved for Halloween anymore.

3) If you want a little more drama in your life, join Matthew McConaughey and Marisa Tomei as they get back into the legal game with The Lincoln Lawyer. I'm not usually one for courtroom dramas, but when McConaughey actually keeps his shirt on and flexes his acting muscles instead of his pecs, things usually turn out well. It's a solid rental from me from what looks to be a solid film.

4) The next film is new but reeks of desperation. The remake of Arthur had a tough run in theaters, and I don't think it looks any better on the small screen. The main problem is that while I like Russell Brand as a supporting character, I don't see him being a leading man. Even with Helen Mirren and Jennifer Garner hanging around, this film just looks bad. It doesn't help that I never really liked the original so the idea of a remake just seems bizarre.

On the Blu-Ray front Terry Gilliam's lovingly trippy Brazil leads things off. Be aware though that this is NOT the Criterion release, so while you will get high def treatment, the special features will be lacking. On the other hand, if you like Criterion releases, you'll be happy to know another film is getting the Blu-Ray upgrade. That would be the David Thewlis tour-de-force Naked. Not such a feel-good film, as Thewlis spends most of the time slumming around Britain, exploring the underbelly and bringing out the worst in people. Still, a fine character study worthy of being seen.

There are plenty of others films to explore - please visit the FilmCrave New DVD Releases and FilmCrave New Blu-Ray Releases pages for all the information.
