New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: A Due Date to Get Low with a Megamind

By Chris Kavan - 02/22/11 at 11:14 AM CT

Hope you're in the mood for a good laugh, because the best new movies this week aim to get a few guffaws out of you.

1) As if Will Ferrell wasn't animated enough already, you get the actual animated feature Megamind. I suspect that this will not be quite Pixar quality here, but if it proves an hour or two of enjoyment, it's worth at least the rental price. I usually get around the checking almost every animated feature somewhere on down the line and this won't be an exception.

2) It's an updated version of Planes, Trains and Automobiles as odd couple Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey, Jr. team up for Due Date. Now whether this can match up to the classic original it's trying to ape, I don't know. Yet from all the previews I've seen it looks like it would be funny enough - maybe not a laugh riot, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

3) If you want to have a comedy with a bit more depth, the indie hit Get Low is right up your alley. Who wouldn't want to plan a party for their own funeral, hear all the tales being spread about them, and promptly crash their own party? It sounds like a hoot and I'm sure the characters are what drives this backwoods tall tale.

4) Finally, if you haven't had the chance to check them out yet, now is the perfect time to catch up with Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy by purchasing the The Stieg Larsson Trilogy box set. You are missing out too - Noomi Rapace is a true talent and the stories are likewise top notch. Get over your fear of subtitles and watch these before the American remake hits theaters.

5) It's also Criterion Collection week as three new films are being offered by the company: Sweet Smell of Success, Senso and Fish Tank. Expect pristine transfers, oodles of extras and plenty of commentary as Criterion never disappoints when it comes to going the extra mile.

On the Blu-Ray front, Christopher Nolan's Memento gets a proper 10th Anniversary releases. You get some of the features present on the two-disc special edition, but also a new "Remembering Memento" look back. If you're a fan of cult films, you're probably drooling over the release of The Last Unicorn. I'm not sure why this animated film is held in such weird esteem, but if they can release Troll 2 to Blu-Ray, I suppose other cult films will follow. Finally, fans of the 80s have a reason to pull out the leg warmers and members only jackets once again, to celebrate the release of 48 Hrs., which is kind of like Beverly Hills Cop, but not.

You can peruse all the great offerings this week on the FilmCrave New DVD Releases and FilmCrave New Blue-Ray Releases pages today.
