New Movies to Crave: Gnomes, Eagles and a Wild Bieber - Just Go With It

After weeks of only having one or two new movies to choose from, Hollywood has finally decided to unleash a torrent - well, compared to the last few weeks anyway. It remains to be seen, however, whether a crooning teen, a goofy romcom, a Roman legion or a bunch of animated gnomes can have an impact on the box office.

1) The Eagle - Although I have a feeling this will perform under the other films, it's probably the only film I really have any desire to see, even if I'm going to wait until it's rental ready. This is the kind of movie I love to rip apart with a select group of friends because they always get the history wrong. It's not like I can't enjoy a good historical epic like Braveheart - it's just so much more fun to point out all the inconsistencies.

2) Gnomeo & Juliet - It's been quite awhile since an animated film has graced the screen, but going up against the Bieb is a pretty steep proposition. Still, I would much rather see a new take on Shakespeare, no matter the material, than a 3D concert film of an artist I have no desire to listen to at all. Plus, who doesn't like garden gnomes?

3) Just Go With It - Adam Sandler had a pretty impressive run with Grown Ups, but Jennifer Aniston has had a pretty rough time box-office wise. The pairing might actually work, but all the ads have focused on the comedy and sex appeal and not so much the romance side - but make no mistake, this is a romcom. Success has been elusive for this genre but No Strings Attached has managed to come out pretty well. We'll see if Sandler and co. can keep things moving in that department.

4) Justin Bieber: Never Say Never - Look, there's no way in hell I'm going to watch this, but obviously I'm not in the right demographic. This can go one of two ways: a huge hit like the Hannah Montana Best of Both Worlds or a disaster like the Jonas Brothers 3D Concert Experience. Those wacky teens are quite fickle, so we'll see if the Bieb is a hero or a goat come Sunday night.

5) Cedar Rapids - I would be amiss if I also didn't mention this comedic gem, even if it's only a limited releases. Ed Helms, John C. Reilly, Rod Corddry, Alia Shawkat, Anne Heche and Sigourney Weaver (amongst many others) all in Cedar Rapids for an insurance convention!? I wonder if they actually filmed on location - because that would be so much more awesome. Anyway, comedy wise, I would pick this over Sandler and Gnomes any day of the week.

We'll see how the weekend pans out and if Hollywood can finally some kind of breakout film for the year.
