New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: Schmucks, a Machete and One Last Exorcism

It looks like the machine is once again rolling as the releases are all over the map this week. Hopefully you like a good scare as well, as there are a couple of good contenders out there.

1) You have to hand it to Robert Rodriguez. Only he could turn a throwaway trailer gag in Grindhouse into a full-fledged movie and start a trend (Hobo with a Shotgun?). Anyway, Machete is just as fun as it sounds: Danny Trejo cutting a swath of vengeance plus plenty of eye candy to keep things rolling. Plenty to like, but it's a guy's movie.

2) If you'd rather lighten the mood, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd are ready to take you to a Dinner for Schmucks. A solid rental for me, if only because I've enjoyed Steve Carell and Paul Rudd in various other films. While I don't think it will blow me away, I sure as hell bet it will be an enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

3) Now we get into some scary stuff. First up, The Last Exorcism with the incredibly scary bendy girl. While exorcism movies can be hit or miss, the fact that Eli Roth was one of the producers gives me some hope it will be more hit than miss. I give even the most tepid horror movies at least one chance.

4) The horror keeps on coming when Renée Zellweger takes on Case 39. This was shelved for quite awhile before making a quiet run in theaters. But as I stated, horror films are kind of a weakness, so even if this isn't quite up to Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead classic standards, I'll still give it a shot.

5) Finally, for people who like a good twist is the documentary (or is it?) / thriller Catfish about a guy, his brother and an online relationship. For once, I've deliberately ignored any and all information regarding this film just so I can see how it pans out. Hopefully I won't be disappointed.

On the Blu-Ray front, Antonio Banderas fans will be happy with the triple threat release of the El Mariachi / Desperado two-pack and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. If you haven't seen the mariachi trilogy yet, it's worth it to watch in high def glory. Bringing out some modern classics, the Backdraft anniversary edition will burn its way into your heart, while Drew Barrymore and Keanu Reeves take a more direct route with romantic films Ever After: A Cinderella Story and A Walk in the Clouds.
