New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: Fire, Sex and Glory Unite!

By Chris Kavan - 10/26/10 at 10:26 AM CT

Quite an eclectic mix to choose from this week, but plenty of good films to choose from - and some I would rather avoid myself.

1) After becoming enamored by the book and the actors in the first film, there's no doubt I'm looking forward to The Girl Who Played With Fire. Actually, I just started reading the book so after I finish it, this will be on my list to get. Noomi Rapace was outstanding in the first film, so even if she spends most of her time in the hospital, I can't wait to see what happens next.

2) Fans of Blu-Ray are no doubt heralding the release of the Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy. These are not iconic films that should have a place in any collection. If you don't own them already (or even if you do) this set should not be missed. Included is a brand new retrospective "Tales from the Future" in six parts and Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly.

3) In a dramatic turn of events, I also look forward to watching Winter's Bone. A bit bleak, but very powerful film about family loyalty and desperate struggle. I think this one could easily show up in a few categories come Oscar time.

4) While incredibly popular, you won't see me lining up for Sex and the City 2. I never got the appeal and I still don't. I can only hope that this films lackluster box office return means I won't have to await Sex and the City 3, but if it picks up in DVD / Blu-Ray sales, they might decide it's worth another shot. Yikes.

5) Finally if you want a war film that is decidedly anti-war, check out the Criterion release of Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory. Kirk Douglas shines in one of his earliest roles about a suicidal mission during WWI that leads to a trial for which justice is absent in the face of the military machine. Powerful and unflinching work from one of the true masters. As with all Criterion films, this comes with a slew of extras including classic interviews, audio commentary and an essay.

Other releases on Blu-Ray include the extra-violent Maniac in all its 30th Anniversary glory. The not-quite-Christmas classic Santa Claus: The Movie and the truly bizarre Nobuhiko Obayashi film (and another Criterion release) of House.

Like a said, hopefully a little something that everyone can enjoy. For a full list of all the new releases, visit the FilmCrave New DVD Releases and the FilmCrave New Blu-Ray Releases pages today.
