Weekend Box Office: Fallen Kingdom Rises to the Top, Incredibles 2 Stands Strong

It was a no-brainer as to what film was going to top the box office. With no other competition, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had a monster opening. While it fell short of the original Jurassic World, that was to be expected. Even with Solo tanking, this June is already the best on record - topping $1 billion and coming in (so far) $39 million ahead of 2015 - when the original Jurassic World roared to life. Even with the competition, it was a good weekend for both The Incredibles 2 and Ocean's 8, which held strong amidst the competition.

1) JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM

Though it didn't have the nostalgia factor that seemed to elevate Jurassic World into the stratosphere, it was still a very good debut weekend for Fallen Kingdom. While early indications put the film in the mid $140 million range, Fallen Kingdom wound up a bit better, with $150 million opening weekend. Sure, that is a 28% drop over the $208.8 million opening of Jurassic World, but that is still an exceptional opening for a sequel and means the franchise is still going strong. The film scored an "A-" Cinemascore - slightly lower than the "A" for Jurassic World, and was 54% male and 44% 25 or older. It represents the fourth best opening of 2018 as well as the second-best opening for Universal (behind only Jurassic World). Now, the original Jurassic World has remarkable legs and no one (Universal included) thinks Fallen Kingdom will do as well. But Fallen Kingdom doesn't need to - with a $170 million price tag (a practical bargain for a blockbuster film) it will turn out just fine with a domestic total of at least $350 million, with $375 million a distinct possibility. Oh, and it turns out that international audiences still love it as well, as Fallen Kingdom earned another $106.7 million - raising its international total to $561.5 million (including $202.6 million from China alone) with a global total of $711.5 million. Fallen Kingdom should be able to join the $1 billion club before it ends its run.

2) THE INCREDIBLES 2

After delivering a record animated opening, The Incredibles 2 continued its strong run, dipping 55.7% and adding $80.9 million and crossing the $350 million mark with a new total of $350.3 million. That puts The Incredibles 2 into the top 10 animated films of all time (after a mere two weeks) landing in the 10th spot above Zootopia ($341.2 million) and just below Inside Out ($356.4 million). It will certainly climb higher on that list with a great shot to top that list in the long run. It is also now the fourth-highest grossing Pixar film of all time. It's not going to have any problem keeping up with demand and I have a feeling it's going to top both lists before it's done. It earned an additional $56.8 million overseas, including a Pixar-best $21.1 million, for an international total of $134 million and worldwide total of $485.1 million and it will soon join the $500 million club.

3) OCEAN'S 8

Ocean's 8 had the best hold among the top 12, at least among all films that didn't add theaters to its count, dipping a light 38.6% and bringing in $11.65 million, enough to push the film across the $100 million mark with a new $100.3 million total. It should wind up the second-best Ocean's film of all time, topping the $117 million of Ocean's 13 and coming in behind the $183 million of Ocean's 11. Whatever the cast, the $70 million film is going to be a profitable one, as it also already has a $70.6 million overseas total for a $171 million global total. The film should be able to push to over $250 million on the low end before it ends its run.

4) TAG

The R-rated comedy dipped 45.1% for a so-so hold, bringing in $8.2 million for a new total of $30.36 million. The film cost $28 million and will reach maybe $50 million stateside, so it's going to have to rely on a little overseas help in order to make it to the black. Still, the film isn't going to break the bank one way or the other, so whether it loses or makes a little, I don't think either is going to sink or save the studio.

5) DEADPOOL 2

Managing to hold on to its 5th place position, Deadpool 2 added another $5.25 million (down 39.5% - a fine hold in its 6th weekend out) for a new total of $304.1 million, topping that $300 million mark. If that wasn't enough, Deadpool 2 reached another milestone, topping $400 million international - for a $700 million worldwide total ($707.1 million to be exact). That means it has officially topped It ($700 million) to become the fourth highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. I'm going to say that is pretty impressive as far as sequels go, let along R-rated films.

Outside the top five: The struggling Solo managed to cross the $200 million mark with a $4.04 million weekend (6th place) and new $202.1 million total. It remains to be seen if it has enough gas left to cross the $209 million mark to not become the lowest-grossing Star Wars film of all time.

The documentary about Fred Rogers, Won't You Be My Neighbor? added 252 theaters to its count and jumped from 15th to 10th place with a $1.875 million weekend (an increase of 87% as well) for a new total of $4.12 million. It looks to expand to 500 theater plus by July.

Next week brings us Sicario: Day of the Soldado as well as basketball comedy Uncle Drew. I'm betting right now Fallen Kingdom will once again take top billing.
