Ocean's 8 and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

Two steps forward, one step back. I keep hoping that a meaty update will come along to whet my appetite, but all I keep getting are crumbs. Once again, the MPAA Ratings Board leaves me wanting so much more as there is but a single wide release getting its ratings due. At least the film is going to be decent - a female twist on the Ocean's franchise that, unlike a certain movie about busting ghosts, looks like it benefits from the gender swap. It's a nibble, but I guess I'm always grateful for what I am offered... but, c'mon, give me more!

So, yeah, let's talk about Ocean's 8. The film follows the estranged sister of Danny Ocean, Debbie (Sandra Bullock) who has just got out of prison but instead of lying low, plans the heist of the century at the prestigious Met Gala. The plan is to replace some very expensive jewels with a flawless replica and make off with millions. In order to do so, Debbie will have to recruit a few friends. Lucky for us, Debbie has some good company with Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Jaime King, Olivia Munn, Dakota Fanning, Katie Holmes, Richard Armitage, James Corden and Ocean's vet Matt Damon all on boards. Though Gary Ross is taking over from Steven Soderbergh, the film looks to have retained all of the action and humor we have come to know from the earlier bro-filled efforts. As I said, female remakes tend to draw criticism and derision from more vocal members of the internet (and humanity in general). While the noise isn't always appreciated, I have to say I was disappointed by Ghostbusters and the upcoming remake of Overboard also seems to miss the mark. However, I think Ocean's 8 looks very enjoyable. If the chemistry works with the cast (one of the main reason the Ocean's films are so much fun), I don't see why this won't be just as popular, among both genders. Rated PG-13 for language, drug use, and some suggestive content.

That's it! Not to say some of the films below aren't going to be worthy, just that they don't have a wide release, but still, check out the full MPAA Ratings Bulletin below:
